Review: Bloodspell by Amalie Howard

Bloodspell (Bloodspell #1) by Amalie Howard

Book description (from Goodreads) –

The spell was simple …
Cruentus Protectum. Defend the Blood.

But what do you do if your blood is your enemy?

Victoria Warrick has always known she was different. An outcast at school, she is no stranger to adversity. But when she receives an old journal for her seventeenth birthday, nothing prepares her for the dark secrets it holds—much less one that reveals she’s a witch with unimaginable power.

What’s more, when she meets the dazzling but enigmatic Christian Devereux, she has no idea how much her life is about to change. Enemies will hunt her. Friends will turn on her. The terrible curse that makes her blood run black will stop at nothing to control her. And Christian has a sinister secret of his own …

Without knowing whom to trust, can Victoria survive her blood’s deadly desires? Or will she lose everything, including herself?

ARC Review

Victoria knows that something is wrong – with nightmares, sleepless nights, skin hot to the touch, and a sense of imposing doom, Victoria knows that something just isn’t right. After an accident that she is the cause of sends her and two classmates to the hospital, she knows she needs answers.

On her 17th birthday, those answers come in the form of a journal, with a revelation that she is a witch – and not just any witch. Victoria has a birthright, one that makes the blood that runs through her veins black and one that makes her very powerful and dangerous.

Being a witch is not Victoria’s only cause of stress, there is also Christian. One moment he is friendly and kind towards Victoria, the next he can barely look at her. Victoria cannot understand his split personality, but when Christian reveals his secret it all makes sense – for Christian’s secret is just as dangerous as Victoria’s blood. Bound by a law that prevents them from loving each other, Victoria will fight, not just for Christian’s love but for her soul. Victoria has a monster within, one that only she has the power to control, but does she have the strength? Will the blood and power that runs through her veins control her, or can she control the blood?

Bloodspell will draw you in from the very first page. With an intriguing prologue, unexpected twists and turns, and a unique story line, Amalie Howard blends romance and suspense together smoothly, to create an impressive and captivating story. The struggle that Victoria has with learning to control the power of her blood is written with such fervor, that you will feel Victoria’s struggle as if it is your own.

I will admit that there were a few times when I was a little confused as to how the power of the blood worked and how it could be controlled, but by the end of the book all was explained. The story is so interesting and intriguing in both the plot and the characters that it more than makes up for the earlier confusion.

A great read.
